What an SEO Audit Turns Up

What a proper SEO audit uncovers: pages Google can't find, titles nobody's touched in years, and internal links that go nowhere useful.

Most Cairns business owners think an SEO audit means checking page speed and keyword density. Mine rarely start there. The same three or four problems keep turning up, and they are usually not the ones anyone expects.

Google has indexed a different site to the one you think is live

Every audit starts with what is actually in the index, not what should be. I regularly find old staging subdomains still crawlable, duplicate versions of the same page under different URLs, and pages the business considers core sitting nowhere in Search Console at all. None of this shows up by glancing at the site. It shows up by pulling the index and comparing it, page by page, against what the business wants found.

Title tags written once and left alone

A title tag from a 2021 redesign is often still doing the job in 2026, on a page that has changed completely underneath it. Duplicate titles across service pages are common too, usually from a template nobody revisited once the second or third location page went up. Fixing this is cheap. Finding it takes someone looking, which is the part that gets skipped.

Regional sites lean hard on the header and footer for navigation and skip the contextual links inside the content itself. The result is a homepage with dozens of links pointing at it and service pages with almost none, which tells Google the homepage is what matters and the service pages are an afterthought. Usually it is the other way round.

Why this matters more in a regional market

In a market the size of Cairns, the ceiling on organic traffic is already low. A handful of stray technical issues does not get diluted by volume the way it might in a capital city market with ten times the search demand. The margin for error is smaller here, so problems that would be a rounding error elsewhere are the difference between showing up and not.

What to do with this

None of the above needs guessing. It needs someone to check, page by page, and write down what they find. If you want that done properly, book an SEO audit and I will show you what your site is doing, not what a template assumes it is doing.
