Why a Worse Website Still Outranks You in Cairns
A plainer, older competitor still outranks you in Cairns. Here is why Google trusts the business, not the website, and what shifts it.

You rebuild your site. It loads fast, it looks sharp, the photos are good. Weeks later you search your own trade in Cairns and a competitor is still sitting above you on a site that looks like it was built in 2014. Same service, worse website, better position.
I get asked about this more than almost anything else. The short version is uncomfortable but freeing once you accept it: Google is not ranking your website. It is ranking your business.
The website is the easy part
A clean, fast, well structured site matters. It is the price of entry. It stops you being filtered out and it gives Google something clear to read. What it does not do is vault you past a business Google already trusts.
Think of the site as your paperwork. Getting the paperwork right means you qualify. It does not mean you win. The competitor with the dated site has usually been in market longer, has more people linking to and searching for them by name, and has a review profile you cannot buy your way past in a fortnight. None of that lives on their homepage. It lives in Google’s read of how known and trusted they are.
What Google weighs instead
For anything with local intent, and almost every trade and service search in Cairns has local intent, the map pack is where the money is. The signals that decide it are mostly not on-page.
The most recent Local Search Ranking Factors survey (Whitespark, late 2025) puts Google Business Profile signals at around a third of local pack weight, the single largest category. Your primary Business Profile category is rated the number one individual ranking factor overall. Reviews have climbed to roughly a fifth of the weight, up from 16 percent two years earlier, and review recency has jumped up the list as its own factor. Around 74 percent of people only read reviews from the last three months.
Read that back. A polished website is nowhere near the top of the list. A completed, correctly categorised Business Profile with a steady flow of recent reviews is most of the game. That is why the plain site beats you. The owner has been collecting reviews and showing up in the profile for years while you were choosing a colour palette.
Why this bites harder in Cairns
In a thin market the established players are entrenched. Cairns has agencies and trades that have ranked for a decade, some with 30 to 50 reviews sitting behind them. A new site, however good, is a newcomer to Google no matter how long you have run the business offline. The search engine does not know your reputation around town. It only knows what it can measure, and on that scoreboard you are starting near zero.
The upside is that the same thinness works for you once you commit. There are not thousands of competitors here. A genuine, steady review habit and a properly filled profile will move you past most of the field faster than it would in a capital city, because the field is smaller and a good part of it is neglected.
What actually shifts it
Not a redesign. Reviews, recent and regular, replied to. A Business Profile that is complete and correctly categorised. Being cited and named around the local web. It is slower than a rebuild and it does not photograph as well, which is most of why people skip it and keep tinkering with the site instead.
If you take one thing from this, make it the reviews. I wrote up what changed about getting them in 2026 here. Start there, not with the homepage.
